Over 100 Arrests in Lee by Task Force November 2015

The Ft. Myers police force and Lee Deputies arrested men all over Lee County in a major drug and gun sweep. This is in response to the numerous shootings and violence erupting throughout both the City and the County. Several men were charged with carrying a concealed firearm and some with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Some were even juveniles. Some of the guns had altered serial numbers.
Some of the arrests involved synthetic drugs and spice. Some of the arrests were for possession of MDMA. Quite a few of the guys were charged with violation of probation and are still in custody. The task force sweep resulted in many people being denied bond or bonds set incredibly high. For people who had charges pending or were on probation, bond was revoked.
In some cases, it looks like the police were just looking for a reason to make a bust. Some were charged with simply loitering and prowling. For those that ran, an addition charge was tackled on of for fleeing and eluding and for those that resisted, the additional charge was resisting arrest or battery on a police officer. May of the people arrested were black only adding to the suspicion that some of the arrests are racially motivated. Time will tell as to whether or not it makes a difference in the homicide rate here in Ft. Myers.
For some, it looks like they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some were simply riding in a car with someone else that had been targeted. You have to be really careful who you hang with. The police crackdown sometimes results in the police bending the rules when it comes to car stops. Often they claim to smell burning weed simply as an excuse to bring a drug dog. There are real defenses to some of these trumped up charges.

Often the search of the car may be illegal or a warrantless search of a house may be involved.

Probation officers, making visits often use that as an excuse to have a detective get inside your home to really look for other violations.
